MezcaleroDate of Birth: 1987 Breed: Dutch Warmblood Height: 17.2hh Stud Fee: $1,600 Booking Fee: $250 Discounts: Premium Mares and Multiple Bookings Breed Approvals: AHHA, RPSI and BWP Comments: Mezcalero is the son of the world-renowned Voltaire, who has gained acclaim both as a successful international competitor and as a sire of supremely successful offspring. Mezcalero's damsire is the incomparable Ramiro, who stood in Holland, Germany, Westfal, and Zangershiede, and was names Horse of the Year in Holland in 1992 due to his breeding success for Leon Melchior. A more successful sire than Ramiro is seldom seen. Mezcalero, like his father and many successful brothers and sisters, has competed and placed internationally, with appearances at such prestigious competitions as Aachen, Arnhem, Monterrey, Luxembourg, Lisbon, and Jerez, and in many world cup qualifiers. He represented Mexico in the 1998 World Equestrian Games, and jumped in many Nations Cup competitions under rider Frederico Fernandez. Mezcalero is the sire of the 5 Year-Old Jumper Champion in Spain, the 2002 IJF East Coast Champion, and the 2004 and 2005 YJC Western Regionals Champion Apache, and of many other successful Sporthorse offspring both here and abroad. Mezcalero's bloodlines and popularity and an individual have been so sought after the semen has been exported to Europe for use there. _______________________ FOLLOW US ON FB! Join today! _______________________ Important Announcement – February 20, 2010 Dear Mare Owners, Please note that as of 2010 October Hill Farm’s stallions *Coconut Grove and Mezcalero will no longer be nominated stallions to the International Jumper Futurity (IJF) program. After much consideration and assessment of the value of the current IJF program to our business, and with the knowledge that there is little interest among foal owners in the program, we find we can no longer carry the expense. This decision in no way affects the eligibility of your 2011 foals in the Young Jumper Championship program, or any foals in the years following, as long as the YJC’s current rules of qualification continue to stand. We feel that the YJC program is a more dynamic and appropriate program for young sporthorses and hope you will take advantage of the series when your young prospect achieves the appropriate age. We would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate our strongest hope that you will provide sire and dam information on your USEF recording applications when submitting them for a USEF life number for your foal. This is an important way for stallion owners to track the performance of their stallion’s progeny, and we rely heavily on you to help the USEF, and indeed the equine industry, to create an accurate national sporthorse database. Please also be aware that some registries, such as AHHA and BWP, are now providing your foal with a USEF life number as a part of the studbook registration process. If this is the case with your registry of choice, the USEF will have the sire and dam information already on file. Thank you and good luck in all your equine endeavors in 2010! Wendy Davis Gerrish

Voltaire
Mezcalero is by the beloved Dutch stallion Voltaire, one of the first performance stallions to go on and prove himself equally important as a breeding stallion. Voltaire won at the highest levels of showjumping, with Nations Cup wins at Calgary, Stockholm, Hertogenbosch, Lanaken, Helsinki, Wiesbaden, and Wembley. In 1989, he was the winner of the Grand Prix of Berlin. Voltaire, as a breeding stallion, became known for passing on his jumping ability and his wonderful stable manners. He was represented by a staggering twenty-eight jumpers in the WBFSH standings for 2000-2001, and was ranked 9 th in the top fifty sires in the ten years from 1991 to 2000. Today his progeny, including at least 33 approved sons, continue to excel in sport around the world and to produce more great horses; in the USEF sire rankings, Voltaire has been ranked the number one sire of hunters from 2003 to 2004, and was ranked 4 th as a jumper sire in 2003, and 8 th in 2004. Some of his sons, such as Concorde, Equador, Gershwin, Julius, and Farmer, are also consistently found in these rankings. |

Furiso II
Voltaire is by the French stallion Furioso II, one of the first of such stallions to be imported to Germany to provide some much-needed Thoroughbred influence. Standing in the Oldenburg region, he easily won his 100-Day test, and was later approved for breeding in Hannover, Rhineland, Hessen, and Westfalia. Furioso II had winners in all disciplines; some noteable ones are FBI, Heissman (Michael Matz's Horse of the Year and 4 th at the Barcelona Olympics), and For Pleasure (ridden by Lars Nieberg to Olympic team Gold in Atlanta, and by Marchus Ehnning to team gold in Sydney). In dressage, Furioso II's son Purioso is the sire of Cocktail (Anky van Grunsven's Grand Prix mount). Furioso II, who died in 1986, sired a total 81 approved sons, 96 dams of approved sons, and has progeny earnings of DM9,000,000. |

Her dam sire is the English Thoroughbred, More Magic xx, who was the sire of 1980 Moscow Olympic dressage gold medallist, Mon Cherie. Gotthard was for seven years the leading sire of showjumpers in Germany, and he sired over thirty-four licensed stallions and twenty six States Premium mares. He also sired numerous showjumpers, among them Goldika, Goldfink, Golden Gate, Goya, and Galipolis. Gotthard is also noteable as a damsire, having produced the mother of World Cup Winner The Natural, as well as the mare Gandria, one of the Hanover region's most decorated broodmares (she is the dam of October Hill's Amaretto D II) |

Marco Polo
Marco Polo was brought to Holland in 1964 as an upgrade sire. While not popular at first, it was soon apparent that Marco Polo's progeny had hereditary jump. The first horse to really announce the arrival of a new jumping sire was the mare, Elzette, who teamed with a 15 year old Franke Sloothaak became Royal Dutch Federation Champion in 1973. The following year, Franke rode Marco Polo to become Champion of the Young Riders. Other successful offspring were Jonker Arno (Henk Nooren), Polo Boy (Katie Monahan), Vivaldi (Melanie Smith), Pybalia (Phillippe Guerdat's Olympic mount in 1984 as well as in Seoul), and Marius (Caroline Bradley's Birmingham Grand Prix winner and 1977 British Showjumper of the Year). Marius went on to sire Milton, perhaps the most famous showjumper in history. Marco Polo was also successful as a broodmare sire; one of his daughters was bred to Voltaire to produce Concorde, and both Hap Hansen's Dalfsen and Debbie Schaffner's Den Ham were from Marco Polo daughters. |
